Guitar Lessons for All Ages and Skill Levels

Come experience the best guitar lessons in Baltimore. Our expert instructors share their love of music through to all kinds of students – from the youngest beginners who have never held a guitar to seasoned musicians looking to sharpen and expand their skills. With a curriculum focused on learning scales, chords, music theory and improvisation in a fun environment, Stages gives students the skills to rock out, gain confidence and become well-rounded musicians in a fun and safe environment. Speaking of rocking out, all students are also given opportunities to write and record original music using technology in the lesson room, and perform at recitals.

Beginner Lessons

In beginner guitar lessons, instructors start with the foundations of guitar-playing – basic scales, chords, rhythm, theory and reading music. Before long, students will be able to strum along to their favorite songs and even play guitar solos. Through weekly lessons at our facility just outside of Baltimore, instructors will inspire the musical imaginations of students, turning them into confident, skilled musicians through weekly lessons. Stages’ motto – Learn. Perform. Record. – means that all students, including beginners, get to experience the joy and exhilaration of recording and performing music, whether at a recital or through one of our band programs.

Intermediate and Advanced Lessons

Intermediate and advanced lessons build and expand on the foundational concepts that guitar students learn in their beginner lessons. Instructors focus on deeper knowledge of theory, scales, chords and rhythm, as well as improvisation, advanced guitar knowledge, composition and recording. Students can show off their first-class skills at recitals and learn how to be part of a musical team as a member of a band in one of our group programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do students need to have prior guitar knowledge?

No prior knowledge is necessary! While some experience with guitar may give students a head start, our instructors are ready and able to start students from scratch and teach them all the basic knowledge they need to get started.

What is the best age to start playing guitar?

Any age is a great age to start learning an instrument! Studies have shown that learning an instrument can increase children’s academic performance and critical thinking. And for those in their later years, learning an instrument is a great way to keep the brain sharp. For students as young as age 4, we offer Mini Music Makers, one-on-one lessons in which students get to have fun experimenting with drums, piano, ukulele and voice while learning about basic music concepts. Ukulele is a great precursor to guitar – there are less strings, the nylon strings are easy on the fingers, all skills transfer to guitar and, of course, everyone loves ukulele!

Do I need to own a guitar or can Stages provide one?

While Stages can provide loaner guitars on occasion, it is highly recommended students have their own guitar. This ensures students can practice at home between their weekly lessons and can get comfortable on their instrument.

Should my student learn on an acoustic or electric guitar?

Whichever type of guitar will inspire a student to practice is the right guitar for them! Some may prefer to be able to pick up their acoustic anywhere and start strumming, others may gravitate towards the electric and the sonic options amplification and effects pedals offer. For beginners, acoustic guitars with nylon strings can be easier on the fingers as they develop calluses, but steel acoustic or electric strings will feel more natural the more a student plays.
