Stages Academy Practice Tips

One of the most important aspects of learning to play music or improving your craft is PRACTICE! When and how you practice can make or break your progress! Let’s take a look at some of these Stages Academy Practic Tips to help you learn your instrument of choice better and more consistently. 

Practicing frequently is more important than practicing for a longer period of time.

Practice with purpose. Try to plan which exercises or pieces you are going to practice ahead of time.

Keep track of your practice. Writing down what strategies worked or didn’t work for you will help you in the future. It will allow you to see patterns in what you like to practice and what you might be forgetting to practice. It will also speed up your progress by allowing you to continue from where you left off during your last practice session.

Record your practice. Audio/video recordings of your practicing will let you listen to what you actually sound like when you’re not thinking about notes and rhythms.

Don’t stress. Take a day off if you’re burnt out, but try not to take more than one day off in a row.

Take a break after about 25 minutes of practice or even if an exercise is overwhelming you. Remember – we play music because we enjoy it! Have fun!

If you are having trouble, play slower! Once you can play something slowly, you can gradually speed up!

Practicing small chunks of the piece will improve the challenging parts faster than practicing the piece from start to finish.

Practice without distraction. Go to a private area and turn off your devices if you need to.

Don’t forget posture. How you practice is how you will perform.

Try to practice shortly after your lesson. If you wait too long, you might forget what you learned!

And finally, remember practice doesn’t make perfect, but it does make permanent!
