November’s student spotlight is a student who has been around Stages longer than almost anyone – drummer Holden Melnick. Holden studies drums and electronic music production with Jason Cohen, who says “Over the past year, I have seen tremendous growth in Holden’s drumming. He works hard, practices a lot, has a great attitude and a strong hunger for growth and he takes criticism well. There is no doubt in my mind that if he continues at this rate, he will do big things with music.”

What do you study and why did you pick that instrument?
My primary instrument is drums but I also study piano and music production. I did not pick drums, they picked me. I was making beats on pots and pans when I was just a baby, got my first kit when I was 8 months old and have been playing ever since.
Who is your teacher and what do you love about them?
Jason Cohen is my teacher. I love that he is not only my drum instructor, but he is also my life coach and my friend.
What kind of music do like to listen to or play? Recent favorite artist?
I listen to and play all kinds of music – from rock to rap to funk to jazz. My current favorite artists are Rage Against the Machine, Tool and the Fearless Flyers.
What’s your favorite thing about Stages or do you have a favorite Stages memory?
My favorite thing about Stages is that it is like a home away from home. Everyone who works at Stages is so welcoming and makes you feel like part of a family. Plus, I love all of the modern technology and equipment that we get to use. One of my most cherished memories was my first ever drum recital. I was 7 years old and was terrified to go on. But Jason encouraged me to go on, and it was one of the most amazing feelings. In fact, I started band programs shortly after and now absolutely loved performing on stage in front of large crowds.
What are your musical goals? What is one of your non-music related goals?
I want to get better every day, not only as a drummer but as a musician. One day, I hope to have a career in the music industry. Outside of music, I want to continue to excel in my studies, be a contributing member of my community… and to make enough money to buy my dream car.
Tell us a favorite fun fact about yourself NOT related to music.
I play club lacrosse and soccer. And I have two mini Bernese Mountain dogs named Gibson and Romeo. (Jason loves them!!)
